An inclusive learning environment for everyone
UCPH is keen to ensure an inclusive study environment with room for everyone. It’s a joint responsibility for staff and students.
Our experiences and students’ perspectives continue to provide new insights, which means that it’s an area that keeps evolving.
If you are curious about the offers and initiatives that support and promote diversity and inclusion at UCPH, you can read about some of them below.
Associations and voluntary organisations at UCPH
UCPH has a total of 276 different associations and voluntary organisations for you to join.
Students across the University meet to discuss politics, participate in mentor groups, attend sport activities, or gather in communities that, for example, support *LGBTQIA+ and *BIPOCs.
See all associations and voluntary organisations at UCPH*LGBTQIA+ is an umbrella term for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and non-binary people. The plus symbol indicates that individuals who challenge predefined norms for sexuality and gender are also included.
*BIPOCs is an umbrella term for Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and other ethnic minorities.
Special support for your education
At UCPH, you can get support and aids for your education. We call it Special Educational Support (SPS) and it’s for everyone with a documented diagnosis, functional impairment, disability or who is neurodivergent.
Under the SPS scheme, you can apply for aids that can help you complete your programme on equal terms with other students. It can be anything from a mentor to an IT package or an adjustable desk. You can also get help and guidance to plan your studies according to your needs, more information about your options on your programme and help with writing an application for a dispensation.
The SPS club: A community for those with special needs
The University houses the SPS club. It’s for those who need special support during their studies and who are looking for a community. You can meet other students with special needs, share your experiences and socialise at dinner-time or board games.
You will also gain relevant knowledge and be given guidance on student life with special needs – and you can help spread information about this to other students.
A study start for everyone
The study start is important. We know that many new students are both excited and a little nervous. That’s why we do our best to ensure that all new students get off to a good start to their student life and are welcomed in a safe environment.
Students are the best to give a good picture of student life on a programme, so you will meet your tutors during the study start. Tutors are students who are further ahead in their studies.
A safe environment for the study start
They will be taught and equipped to welcome new students. For example, they learn how to create a safe space, deal with conflicts and use their role to make positive changes for others.
In addition, UCPH has set out rules and frameworks for the study start to help create an inclusive and safe environment. We have an alcohol policy which means that alcohol is not allowed during the study start or the introduction camp. Events where alcohol is allowed can only take place after 17:00, and you will never be required to attend or drink alcohol.
At official events, there will always be a sober tutor or staff member present.
A learning space for everyone
Inclusive learning spaces at UCPH
The University’s teaching staff are regularly offered courses in how to create an inclusive learning space with room for diversity in student groups and learning communities.
It’s important to have learning spaces that accommodate the many different needs of UCPH students. We are also working to ensure that the teaching is available to all.
Offensive behaviour: where to get help
When many people are gathered in one place, situations may arise that some people experience as unpleasant or offensive. At UCPH, we try to prevent such situations, but should they occur, you are not alone.
Student counselling and KUallies
You can get help from the student counselling and KUallies. The difference between the two is that the student counselling service is part of the study environment while KUallies is a cross-university counselling service.
KUallies and the student counselling both offer you:
- a confidential environment where you can talk about what happened
- someone who listens and provides guidance
- an overview of your support options
- help to file a complaint if that’s what you want.
