Does your residence permit exempt you from paying tuition?
Not only is the type of your residence permit decisive for whether you must pay application and tuition fees. It is also decisive for when you can or must apply for admission.
You must apply within the deadline for non-EU citizens, if your Danish residence permit does not exempt you from having to pay application and tuition fees.
However, you are able to apply within both the deadline for applications from non-EU citizens as well as the deadline for applications from EU citizens, if your residence permit exempts you from having to pay application and tuition fees.
If in doubt whether you are able to apply within the EU-deadline, please send an email to admissions@samf.ku.dk including a copy of your current residence permit.
Residence Permit
If based on your residence permit, you are exempted from paying tuition fee, you are obligated to inform the Faculty of any and all changes in relation to your residence permit, e.g if your residence permit is revoked or become invalid, or you are awarded a different type of residence permit than the one based on which you have been exempted from paying tuition, by sending an email to admissions@samf.ku.dk. The Faculty will then consider anew whether or not you are able to be exempted from having to pay tuition for the remainder of your studies on the degree programme.
If your residence permit exempts you from having to pay application and tuition fees, you must document this by submitting a copy of your residence permit as well as a copy of your residence card when you apply for admission.
*NOTE: the country, which issued your permanent residence permit, may revoke your permit if you leave the country to live somewhere else. It is your responsibility to research the consequences of your relocation to Denmark. If your permanent residence permit is revoked you will have to pay tuition fees like all other non-EU/EEA citizens.
**NOTE: The status as 'accompanying spouse' is not the same as family reunification. An applicant with the status 'accompanying spouse' must pay application fee as well as tuition fee.
Applicants with a temporary work permit in Denmark (e.g. Green Card) have to pay the tuition fee.
If you are unsure whether you must pay the tuition fee, please contact the MSc Admission Team at admissions@samf.ku.dk before the application deadline.
Payment policy and deadlines
The Faculty of Social Sciences charges tuition fee for one semester at a time. It is not possible to split the payment into several instalments.
All fee-paying students must pay the semester tuition fee in full for four consecutive semesters regardless of how many ECTS they are registered for each respective semester.
You only need to pay for maximum four semesters. If you, against expectation, do not complete your degree within the prescribed four semesters, you will not need to pay a fifth semester of tuition fees.
Payment deadlines are as follows:
- First semester: You will receive a message in the Application Portal indicating the terms and deadline for payment of tuition in the course of April.
- Second semester: 31 January - The payment request will be sent mid-January to your KU email account
- Third semester: 31 August - The payment request will be sent mid-August to your KU email account
- Fourth semester: 31 January - The payment request will be sent mid-January to your KU email account
NB: Your bank may retain a service fee when processing the payment transfer. The Payer (sender of the payment) will bear all of the transaction fees.
Tuition refund policy
The deadline for getting a full tuition refund is 31 July. On or after 1 August, only the following will result in a full tuition refund:
- If your application for a Danish residence permit is rejected.
- If you are conditionally accepted but do not fulfil the conditional requirements stated in your official letter of admission.
- If you have paid for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th semester, but withdraw from the degree programme before the semester starts (official withdrawal date must be 31 August or 31 January at the latest).
- If you subsequently obtain a residence permit or citizenship exempting you from paying the tuition fee. The validity date of the permit, or citizenship, must be before the semester start (the official validity date must be 31 August or 31 January at the latest).
NB: Your bank may retain a service fee when processing the reimbursement. The Recipient (the receiver of the money) will bear all of the transaction fees.
